Piha Campground and Associated Facilities Wastewater Treatment and Disposal

This Piha wastewater treament and disposal system services a number of facilities including the Piha campground, camp managers house and library, and most recently has been designed to accomodate the Piha RSA, Bowling Club and South Piha Public toilets.

Finally, a pump-out free summer for Piha's largest Wastewater System

Summer 2010/2011 was pump-out free for one of Piha's largest onsite wastewater systems. Wastewater in Piha over the summer months is a particularly difficult issue when the population significantly increases, quadrupling the wastewater flows and putting immense pressure on these on-site systems.

The system servicing the Piha campground and various other facilities has been undersized for many years, requiring regular pumping out and removal over summer. Last summer over the peak months 500, 000 litres were removed!

The plant has been being upgraded ready for this summer and even with the addition of the Piha RSA, Bowling Club and South Piha public toilets to the new and improved system the outcome has been a success.

Highlights include:

  • better overall treatment (to advanced secondary plus UV disinfection)
  • higher quality effluent, less than 5 mg/l BOD , suspended solids and less than detectable micro-bacteria
  • greater water savings. 20% of the treated wastewater is returned to the toilets for flushing
  • Future-proofed system design, for the next 10 years
